What is Remote Deposit Anywhere (RDA)?

Remote Deposit refers to the ability to deposit a check into a bank/credit union account from a remote location, such as an office or home, without having to physically deliver the check to the bank/credit union. This is typically accomplished by scanning a digital image of a check into a computer (or taking a picture of it with the camera function of your smartphone), then transmitting that image to the bank/credit union, a practice that became legal in the United States in 2004 when the Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act (or Check 21 Act) took effect.

The Check 21 Act makes the digital image of a check legally acceptable for payment purposes, just like a traditional paper check. Remote deposit should not to be confused with Direct Deposit which refers to the practice of posting an employee's weekly earnings directly to his or her bank/credit union account. With remote deposit, you can scan an image of a check, send the image to your Credit Union electronically, and see the funds added to your account more quickly.

What are the benefits of using RDA?

The number one benefit is convenience. RDA allows you to deposit a check into your USSFCU checking or savings account from your home, office or on the go with USSFCU Mobile 24 hours/day, 7 days a week.

Am I required to use it?

No. We do however, encourage all of our members to use the electronic services available to them for convenience and cost savings. You may choose at this time to continue following the procedures in place for depositing checks by other means and you will continue getting the same level of service that you’ve come to expect.

Am I eligible to use Remote Deposit?

Certain qualifications for becoming a Remote Depositer must be met.

  1. Member of the Credit Union;
  2. An individual, account ;
  3. Neither primary or joint on account has declared bankrupty;
  4. Has not caused the Credit Union a loss;
  5. Has not violated Member Privilege provisions or had any NSFs (Not Sufficient Funds);
  6. Passes an eFunds verification;  and
  7. Has not been removed from the RDA program.
  8. There are no age restrictions.
What accounts can accept RDA deposits?

USSFCU Checking and Savings only.

Is there a fee?

No. There is no fee for using the Remote Deposit Anywhere application to deposit your checks into a USSFCU checking or savings account remotely.

How Do I Get Started?

You can access Remote Deposit Anywhere with the “Deposit Checks’ tab via CU AnyHour+ online banking or USSFCU Mobile using a single sign-on banking ID . Call us or visit a branch and a Member Service Officer will walk you through the process of making a deposit if needed.

How will I know that my deposit was posted correctly?
You will receive a message immediately that your scan was received. The transaction will be posted to your account by 4:00 EST with the notation “RDA Deposit”.
What if I scan my check and it is not accepted?

If your scan is at first rejected, try adjusting the brightness or contrast settings on your device. Sometimes when the contrast between the print and the background of the check is not great enough scanning can be difficult.

Is there a limit or any restrictions on what can be deposited remotely?

1) USSFCU will accept no more than 10 items in a month.
2) Individual items must be $5,000 or less per month.
3) Monthly total may not exceed $10,000.

Do I still need to endorse the checks I'm depositing?

Yes. The checks must be endorsed “For Deposit Only” and bear the member’s account number.

What Do I Do With the Check once I've Scanned It?

When a check is scanned using Remote Deposit (or picture taken with the camera function of your smartphone using the USSFCU Mobile app “Deposit Checks” tab), images of the front and back of the check are taken. These images will be sent as an Image Replacement Document (or Check 21 transaction) and will be processed as if it were a paper item brought in to the Credit Union. You are required to keep the physical checks in a secure location for 60 days. After that time, they must be destroyed using a crosscut shredder or incinerator.

What is the cut-off time for processing the checks?
Checks may be deposited at any time, however if you would like them to be processed with today's work, they must be submitted by 3:00 pm Eastern Standard Time.
What happens to the image?

An image of the check goes to the Credit Union, and we begin the process of collecting money from the check writer.

Should I be concerned with the security of Remote Deposit Anywhere?

USSFCU has the primary responsibility of protecting the information and the systems that the information resides on from compromise and attack. Keeping a member's information safe has always been just as important as keeping our members’ money safe. Safeguarding the system, the information and the database remains priority one with USSFCU!
Users of RDA need to be concerned with what to do with the deposited item once the scanning is completed and the transaction posted.

  • Do not throw them out with the trash.
  • Do not keep the originals in a file folder for an indefinite period of time (like forever).
  • Do not make copies of all of the checks and shred the originals.

After the original check has been successfully scanned and processed, the original item should be destroyed using, at a minimum, a "cross-cut" shredder. This should be done (60 days after item has been deposited). While waiting to verify the deposit, the original items should be locked up in a safe just like you would lock up cash. Why? Checks are like cash. They should be treated as negotiable instruments.

What kind of equipment will I need?

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
This section covers some of the minimum requirements to be able to use RDA with your flatbed scanner.

SCANNER‐BASED DEPOSITS – PC or LAPTOP
The end user must have a PC or laptop with these minimum requirements in order to use the RDA application.

SCANNER LIST

This section contains a sampling of scanners known to be compatible or incompatible with the RDA application.

Note: This is not meant to be a complete list of acceptable scanners, but only those tested and their compatibility known. We cannot definitely list for members all the scanners that may be compatible with RDA because scanner manufacturers do not always implement or list which standards for communicating they support.

You can however, test your scanner before creating a deposit to insure that one of the compatible drivers are installed. Click “Test Scanner” to perform a compatibility check on your scanner. A list of installed scanners that support the necessary drivers on your PC or laptop will appear. Pick the scanner that you intend to use from the drop down list provided, click “Test”. You will receive one of the following messages:

Succeeded – Continue with deposit process.

Cannot Communicate – This message will appear if the scanner selected is not connected to the PC or laptop at the time of the test. Select another option or connect the proper scanner.

Failed – This message will appear if the scanner drivers are not compatible with the RDA application.

Why doesn't my scanner work with RDA?
WHY SOME SCANNERS DO NOT WORK WITH RDA – AN EXPLANATION OF THE SCANNER INTERFACE. TWAIN is an industry accepted, yet flexible standard for communicating with PC peripherals such as scanners and cameras. The TWAIN standard is not a strict standard and hardware vendors may declare their devices are TWAIN compatible because they have implemented and tested a few functions defined in the TWAIN standard. However, there are multiple functions in the TWAIN standard and not all functions are required. Therefore a hardware manufacturer may be accurate in their statement that a particular model is TWAIN compliant, and still may not support all required TWAIN functions needed to work with RDA. To help increase the number of scanners that will be compatible with RDA, our provider has developed an alternative method of getting images from scanners called Windows Image Acquisition (WIA). This method may be available for some scanner models as well. It requires .NET 2.0 be installed on the user's PC and will install it if it is not. If the .NET installation does not succeed on the users' PC then RDA will not work. Even with these two methods of image capture, not all scanners will be compatible with RDA.
