Vacation Rental Scams: How to Keep Your Dream Getaway from Becoming a Costly Nightmare
Published: June 17, 2026
Planning a vacation should be exciting, not stressful. But scammers know travelers are eager to find the perfect getaway, and they often take advantage of that by creating fake rental listings, copying legitimate property information, or requesting fraudulent payments.
Vacation rental scams can appear on booking websites, social media, online marketplaces, and even fake travel websites designed to look legitimate. Scammers often use stolen photos and descriptions from real properties to create convincing listings. In some cases, they copy an actual rental listing and advertise it at a much lower price to attract unsuspecting travelers.
One of the biggest warning signs is being asked to pay outside a trusted booking platform. A scammer may claim there is a problem with the website, offer a special discount for paying directly, or request payment through a wire transfer, gift card, cryptocurrency, or payment app. Once money is sent through these methods, it can be difficult—or impossible—to recover.
Common red flags include unusually low prices, limited or no reviews, requests to communicate outside the platform, and demands for payment through nontraditional methods.
To help protect yourself, book through reputable travel and rental websites whenever possible. Read reviews carefully, verify the property’s address online, and compare information across multiple sources. Be especially cautious of deals that seem too good to be true, particularly during peak travel seasons.
Before making a payment, communicate through the platform’s messaging system whenever possible. Avoid clicking links in unexpected emails or text messages, and be wary of anyone who pressures you to act quickly or move the conversation off the booking platform.
When paying for travel arrangements, consider using a credit card when possible. Credit cards may offer stronger fraud protections and dispute options than some other payment methods.
If you suspect a vacation rental scam, stop communicating with the individual immediately. Contact your financial institution as soon as possible, report the listing to the booking platform, and report the incident to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
A little extra research before booking can help ensure your vacation is memorable for the right reasons. Stay alert, verify listings before you pay, and trust your instincts if something doesn’t seem right.
