Card Skimming Scams: How to Spot Them and Protect Your Money

Card skimming scams are a common way criminals steal payment card information. Skimmers are small devices secretly attached to card readers at places like ATMs, gas pumps, and self-checkout kiosks. When you insert or swipe your debit or credit card, the skimmer captures your card information. In some cases, criminals also install hidden cameras or fake keypads to steal your PIN.

How to Spot a Card Skimmer

Skimming devices can be difficult to detect, but these warning signs may indicate that a machine has been tampered with:

  • The card reader feels loose, bulky, or different from the rest of the machine.
  • The keypad appears unusually thick or is difficult to press.
  • Security seals are broken, damaged, or covered with residue.
  • An unusual object or possible camera is positioned near the keypad.
  • The machine looks damaged or different from nearby terminals.

Gently check the card reader and keypad before using the machine. Do not use it if anything looks or feels unusual.

When available, consider tapping your card or using a mobile wallet instead of inserting or swiping. Mobile wallets use security technology that helps protect your actual card number during a transaction.

How to Reduce Your Risk

A few simple precautions can help protect your card and account information:

  • Inspect ATMs and payment terminals before using them.
  • Cover the keypad when entering your PIN.
  • Use ATMs inside financial institutions or in well-lit, monitored locations.
  • Avoid machines that appear damaged or altered.
  • Review your accounts regularly for unfamiliar transactions.
  • Set up transaction alerts to be notified when your card is used.

Think Your Card Was Skimmed?

Take action promptly if you believe your card information may have been compromised:

  • Lock or turn off your card through your banking app, if available.
  • Contact your financial institution to report the suspected fraud.
  • Review recent transactions and report anything you do not recognize.
  • Request a replacement card, if recommended.
  • Change your PIN if you entered it at the affected machine.
  • Continue monitoring your accounts for additional suspicious activity.

Promptly reporting suspected fraud gives your financial institution an opportunity to secure your card and help address unauthorized transactions.

Stay Alert

Before inserting or swiping your card, take a moment to inspect the machine. Use contactless payments when available, protect your PIN, and regularly review your account activity.
