As summer winds down, many people jump at the chance to take a final trip before fall. Scammers know this—and they take advantage of the excitement around “Labor Day getaway” bargains.

Fake last-minute vacation deals often appear as unbelievable discounts on hotels, flights, or all-inclusive packages. Their goal? To grab your payment details quickly and disappear before you realize the trip doesn’t exist.

Common Red Flags of Fake Travel Deals

  1. Too-good-to-be-true prices – Offers far below market rates for prime destinations should raise suspicion.
  2. High-pressure booking tactics – Phrases like “Book now or lose your spot!” are common scammer tricks.
  3. Unverified booking sites or sellers – Fraudsters create convincing fake websites or post false offers in travel groups.
  4. Unusual payment requests – Asking for wire transfers, gift cards, or cash apps instead of secure payment methods.

How to Book Safely

  1. Verify the source – Use well-known travel agencies, airline websites, or verified booking platforms.
  2. Check reviews and contact info – Look for consistent customer feedback and confirm phone numbers or addresses.
  3. Use secure payments – Pay with a credit card for added fraud protection.
  4. Be cautious with links – Instead of clicking links from emails or social media ads, type the official site address into your browser.

Before clicking any travel deal link:

  1. Hover before you click – See the real web address in the corner of your screen.
  2. Look for HTTPS – The address should start with https:// and show a padlock icon.
  3. Check the spelling – Watch for swapped letters or extra words (e.g., “paypa1.com” instead of “paypal.com”).
  4. Avoid shorteners unless verified, as services can hide malicious links. Use an expander tool first.
  5. Scan it first – Test links on sites like VirusTotal or Google Safe Browsing.
  6. Trust your gut – If the link feels “off” or came from an unknown sender, don’t click.
