Contactless Payments: Safe, Secure & Built for Speed
Published: April 18, 2025

As technology continues to evolve, so do the ways we make purchases. From tapping your card to paying with your phone or smartwatch, contactless payments are quickly becoming the go-to method for fast, convenient—and most importantly—secure transactions.
At USSFCU, your financial safety is our top priority. That’s why we’re sharing the facts on how these modern payment methods work and why you can trust them.
No Swiping, No Worries
Contactless payments use encrypted technology like Near-Field Communication (NFC) and Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) to complete transactions with just a tap. Unlike swiping a card, which exposes your card number, contactless payments create a unique, one-time code for each transaction—making it incredibly difficult for fraudsters to intercept and misuse your information.
Types of Contactless Payments
Tap-to-Pay Cards:
Most modern credit and debit cards—including those issued by USSFCU—come equipped with contactless functionality. Look for the sideways Wi-Fi symbol to confirm.
Digital Wallets:
Apple Pay®, Google Wallet™, Samsung Pay®, and similar apps store your card info securely. Authenticate with your phone (PIN, Face ID, etc.) and simply hold it near the reader to pay.
QR Code Payments:
Some businesses accept payments through scannable QR codes that direct you to a secure checkout page or peer-to-peer app. Just be cautious—QR codes can be spoofed, so always verify you’re scanning from a trusted source.
Built-in Security You Can Count On
Worried about fraud? Rest easy knowing:
- Encrypted Tokens: Your real card number is never shared.
- Authentication Required: Mobile wallets require PINs or biometrics.
- Limited Range: Tap-to-pay cards must be within inches of the terminal, limiting unauthorized use.
